What are agricultural inputs and what types exist?

Agricultural inputs are products or materials used in agriculture to improve crop production and quality. There are several types of agricultural inputs, including:

Fertilizers

Substances that provide essential nutrients to plants.

Pesticides

Chemical or natural products used to control pests and diseases in crops.

Bioinputs

Natural or organic products used to improve soil health and protect crops.

Improved seeds

Seed varieties developed to obtain higher quality and yield crops.

What are the main agricultural crops in the USA?

The main agricultural crops in the United States vary by region and climate, but overall the country produces a wide range of important crops. Corn is the largest crop, mainly grown in the Midwest, and is used for food, animal feed, and biofuel. Soybeans are another major crop often rotated with corn and are used for oil, animal feed, and various food products. Wheat is grown in multiple regions, including the Great Plains, with varieties such as winter and spring wheat. Cotton is concentrated in southern states like Texas, Georgia, and Mississippi and is used for textiles, oil, and animal feed from byproducts. Rice is primarily grown in Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Fruits and vegetables include oranges and grapefruit in Florida, apples in Washington, and vegetables like lettuce, tomatoes, and potatoes in California and Idaho. Alfalfa is an important forage crop for livestock, widely grown across the Midwest and West. Other crops like barley, oats, sorghum, peanuts, sugar beets, and grapes are grown in specific regions for food, animal feed, or wine production. The U.S. agricultural system is highly diverse, with crop selection influenced by climate, soil, market demand, and technology.

What bio-inputs do you need to protect your crops?

Inoculants, biopesticides, entomopathogenic fungi, beneficial bacteria, plant extracts, and compost are some options.

What types of natural fertilizers are there?

They are derived from organic or mineral sources. Animal manure, compost, guano (seabird droppings), seaweed extracts, rock phosphate, and agricultural gypsum are examples. They are used in organic farming due to their lower environmental impact.

What are nitrogen fertilizers?

Whether of natural or synthetic origin, fertilizers contain nitrogen as their main nutrient, essential for plant growth and green coloration. Urea, ammonium nitrate, and ammonium sulfate increase the productivity of corn, wheat, and soybeans.
